Suga says he got Biden's backing on Senkakus in first phone talks

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga spoke with
U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday
morning for the first time since the latter

選挙に勝利したものの、まだ任期が始まっていない大統領
に対して使います。


・the latter　[名] 後者

前者はthe formerです。


・election　[C] 選挙

・Tokyo　[名] 日本政府

もちろん「東京」という意味がもともとですが、
英語では首都で「○○政府」という意味を表せます。


・soon-to-be-inaugurated　[形] もうすぐ就任する

inaugurateは「〜を就任させる」という意味の第３文型の動詞。

これを使って、無理やり、ハイフンでつないで「もうすぐ就任する」
という意味を作っています。

ハイフンで無理やり形容詞を作ることに関しては英語は寛容で、
こういった形がしばしば使われます。


・reassure　[4V] O1にO2と再保証する

・administration　[C] 政権

・commit to　[3V] 〜に取り組む

日本でぴったりの表現がなく、「コミットする」と言われたりしますが、
「ちゃんとやる」「しっかりと身を捧げてやる」
というようなニュアンスです。

「バイデン次期大統領」とはっきりと言いました。

また、バイデン次期大統領は尖閣諸島は日米安保条約
