Suspect Prius eludes Fed, Toyota testers

Investigators with Toyota Motor Corp. and the federal government were
unable to make a Toyota Prius speed out of control as its owner said it
did on a California freeway, according to a memorandum obtained
Saturday by AP that a congressional spokesman says casts doubt on the
driver's story.

トヨタ自動車株式会社と連邦政府の調査者はトヨタのプリウスを、所有者がカリ
フォルニアの高速道路でスピードが出て制御不能になったと言った通りの状況を
再現することができなかった、これはAP通信が土曜日入手したメモによるもの
で、議会のスポークスマンは運転者の主張に疑問を投げかけるものだと言ってい
る。

アメリカなどでのリコール問題に揺れるトヨタですが、先日、カリフォルニアの
高速道路で、男性が運転するプリウスが、制御不能になり、超高速で走り続けて
しまったという事態が。

なんとか、警察官がプリウスにパトカーを横付けし、指示を出したところ、やっ
と止まり、幸いけが人は出ませんでした。

運転手はブレーキを思いっきり踏んだのだが、アクセルが戻らなかったと主張。
しかし、その後のトヨタとアメリカ政府の調査では、そのような状況は起こら
ず、しかも、ブレーキには強く踏まれた跡がないことが判明。

「この男性はお金に困っていた」「警察官が減速する対策の指示をしたが、従わ
なかった」という報道もあり、慰謝料目当てだったのではないかという声が出始
めました。
